ABOUT THE FREEDIVING LIFESTYLE WORKSHOPS

The Freediving Lifestyle Workshops are now combined in a two-day, intensive experience!

The Freediving Lifestyle Workshops have been designed from the ground up to educate the aspiring deep freediver on lifestyle practices that can greatly and positively influence their freediving progression.

Drawing from a 13 year background in the classical yoga tradition, 6 years as a freediving educator, and my own deep diving progression, currently surpassing 80 metres in training, I will show you the daily practices I personally use and trust can aid you greatly in your freediving progression.

The two-day experience is suitable for all levels, but especially those who have fallen in love with deep freediving, and its deeper dimensions, and wish to design their lifestyles around freediving.

THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS ARE:

BREATHING MOBILITY
Pre-dive preparation, or daily discipline.

Learn a 15 minute routine to mobilise and prepare all the  muscles and systems of breathing and apnea.

NAULI KRIYA
Liberate the abdomen.

Nauli Kriya is one of the 6 ‘shatkriyas’ (purification practices) of traditional hatha yoga. The numerous benefits of Nauli Kriya include;

massaging of the internal organs
stimulation of the digestive processes
stimulation of the detoxification/lymphatic system
mobility, strengthening and mastery of the breathing muscles and psoas.

YOGA ASANA FOR FREEDIVERS
Develop superior control of the breathing muscles, and full body mobility and flexibility.

Learn a 45m ‘asana’ (yoga posture) routine. Informed by more than a decade of practice and understanding in the tradition of vinyasa krama.

The sequence is designed to be particularly specific to the freediver’s needs (less hamstring stretches, more thoracic cage and spinal mobility).

Includes detailed workshopping of the ujjayi breathing technique and the bandhas (muscular and energetic locks).

PRANAYAMA (YOGIC BREATHING)
Master control of the breathing muscles, develop mental discipline and fortitude,  balance the mood and stabilise the personality.

Pranayama is perhaps the most important element of classical and traditional hatha yoga, being that practice which unifies the breath and mind most profoundly.

The true purpose of pranayama is deeply spiritual and requires a very thorough education with both practical and theoretical understandings.

Here we take only the very preliminary practice of pranayama in the form of ‘kapalabhati’ and ‘ujjayi pranayama’, practices that are enormously useful for the freediver.

You will learn the traditional method of initiating this pratice, including use of digital counting, metronomes and mantra.

ADVANCED STRETCHING & EQUALISATION
Deep work in the thoracic cage, essential equalisation practice.

How do you maintain your thoracic cage adapation to depth when you are away from the water?  This 30 minute routine will teach you one way to do that through advanced stretching with ‘ball and bottle’.

DEEP RELAXATION & RECOVERY
Downregulate the sympathetic nervous system, understand your relaxation potential.

Being able to consciously down-regulate the sympathetic nervous system and up-regulate the parasympathetic nervous system is essential to recovery of the nervous system.

Learn a variety of techniques to do this including yoga nidra (yogic sleep), autogenic training and self-guided relaxation techniques.

ANAPANASATI MEDITATION
Sharpen your concentrative powers, understand the nature of mind.

How often do intrusive and/or negative thoughts cause you to dive without joy? Anapanasati is a powerful concentrative meditation practice that allows you to develop mindfulness of the present moment and sense perceptions.

It helps you to discern the patterns of thinking that hold you back from realising your true potential, and stay grounded in present moment awareness.
